Gosal (The Rift), first published in 1994, was praised as one of the finest Persian contemporary novels created in exile by  writers, critiques and literary reviewers such as Reza Baraheni (novelist, poet, literary theorist, former president of PEN Canada), Daryush Ashuri (prominent Iranian linguist and critic - France), Nassim Khaksar (novelist – university professor - Netherland), Reza Farrokhfal (writer, critic – university professor - Montreal), Nader Baktash (novelist- activist- U.K) Reza Ghasemi (novelist, playwright and musician - France) Nazi Azima (Critic, translator, and broadcasting producer - Czech republic) and Assad Seyf (essayist – Germany). It was then reprinted twice due to public demand in 1997 and 2001. 

 

 


Excerpts from reviews on Gosal (The Rift)

Reza Allameh Zadeh (writer, film maker- Netherlands): Gosal is one of the best Farsi novels written in the recent decades.

Javad Mojabi (writer, poet, and researcher - Iran): This novel is the best I’ve read in the recent years. I was expecting many flaws (as a work belonging to a writer living out of Iran); I admit that I was wrong.  

Darioush Ashuri (linguist, translator, and academician- France):  I recently received both, the novel (Gosal) and the collection of poems (Sabz) by Sasan Ghahreman. The language used in poetry and in prose is fresh and crystal clear. I found him (the author) very promising.

Bekry Tamizi (critic – researcher - France):  Among the Iranian male writers Sasan Ghahraman should be mentioned here (regarding the feminist imagery in the works of Jose Saramago and Tahir Ben Jeloon.) He pays attention to issues such as social and cultural gender and sexuality of women and women’s progress. Despite other male writers who address only sexual relations, he looks at various aspect of female identity. At the turn of twenty first century, this quality is a turning point and will be followed by other men and male writers.  

Ibrahim Nabavi (writer, satirist, and journalist – Iran/Germany): During my trip to Germany I had the chance to read very good works by Iranian writers living abroad. The best though is Gosal, a novel by Sasan Ghahraman.

Hesam Saremi (critic, Berlin – Iran): Gosal could be evaluated as a work belonging most to here and now, more then all other titles published in the recent decades, and a step forward in the Iranian immigration literature. 

Reza FarokhFal (writer, critic - Canada): Gosal is an example of the real and successful literature of the émigré.

Nazi Azima (translator, critic, broadcaster and journalist - Prague): Gosal is one the few successful and ingeniously written literary works among Iranian immigrated writers.

Nader Baktash (writer, activist - Germany): The story of Gosal is viewed from various angles and by a proficient eye. This is the story of liberating and advanced ideas, views, and relationships; settling in more and more, now, after a decade and a half of the date Iranian’s immigrating of Iran. What a French critic said about Kia Rostami (Iranian famous film maker) could be said about Ghahraman and his novel: “In his work objectivity exists; the basis of modern art.”

Majid Roshangar (critic, journalist - California): This novel falls exactly in the genre known as immigration literature. It’s a fine and successful novel, worthy of a serious critique. The author has given us a good novel, with a modern structure and beautiful texture. Hushang Goshiri (late Iranian novelist) said in an interview regarding immigration literature: “As it is, I am not hopeful of immigration literature.” I would like to urge Golshiri to read Gosal; he will change his mind.

Ashkan Avishan (critic, researcher, Sweden):  Gosal is written with a smooth hand, an easy going, flowing structure. The prose has absorbed some of the transparency and pulsation of the author’s poetic ability. Ghahraman does not write nor analyzes as if writing a report of life, rather he recreates it.
